Product Care
- How should I take care of my footwear? Made using selected leathers and fabrics, Tod's shoes offer the perfect blend of sophistication, craftsmanship and Made in Italy savoir-faire. Leather footwear must be regularly cared for in order to fully appreciate their beauty and comfort for years to come, and any imperfections, creases, shading or irregularities are to be considered intrinsic characteristics of the product.
We recommend storing the product in perfect condition, dry and clean, in a ventilated environment, away from heat sources and direct light from lamps or the sun, inside the bags provided in the packaging. It is recommended to not put shoes in direct contact with other leathers or fabrics and to avoid contact with alcohol, oils or solvents, and to ensure that crystals and embroidery are well protected. It is recommended that you change shoes after every two consecutive days of use, which will allow the leather fibres to breathe and take a rest from stresses.
It’s completely natural for the shape of your shoe to change over time. Tod's shoes mould themselves to the foot of their wearer and may undergo further changes as a result of prolonged wear. Leather, by its nature, tends to form creases and folds over time: to prolong its elasticity and maintain the shape of your footwear, it is advisable to fill the inside with tissue paper when not worn.
Advice on the correct handling of materials:
Smooth or grained leather
To clean smooth or grained leather, stains should be wiped with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Once the leather is dry, polish with circular movements using a high-quality neutral cream and a soft cloth.
Varnished leather
Varnished leather is characterised by its shiny surface, obtained by applying one or more layers of varnish. Varnished leather can be cleaned with a clean, soft, light-coloured cloth that’s slightly damp, and then dried with a dry soft cloth. To avoid colour transfer, avoid contact with other leathers or highly pigmented colours.
Metallic leather
Laminated leather, also known as metallic leather, is characterised by its surface that's covered with a very thin metallic film, giving the product a shiny finish. Metallic leather can be cleaned using a soft, dry cloth.
Exotic leather
Exotic leather can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth and then polished following the direction of the scales, as these leathers are delicate and very sensitive to moisture. If they come into contact with water, they should be wiped thoroughly with a soft, absorbent cloth.
Chamois leather
Chamois leather is distinguished by its warm and velvety feel which is created using ancient, timeless craftsmanship. Suede and nubuck leather can be cared for with a soft bristle shoe brush to preserve its velvety texture. If footwear has been in contact with water, allow it to dry sufficiently before cleaning. For surface stains, a rubber brush can be used.
Pony-effect leather
These precious and delicate pony-effect calfskins have retained their natural coat thanks to a special tanning process. Any colour shading demonstrates the authenticity of the leather. For cleaning, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and always respect the direction of the hair. Avoid repeated rubbing with abrasive objects (trouser hems, brushes, etc.) which can alter the structure of the hair.
Matching fabrics and materials
Footwear with a fabric combined with leather, calfskin footwear combined with suede or footwear made entirely of fabric should never be washed by immersing them in water or a washing machine. This can cause damage or colour transfer and could detach the sole of the shoe. The fabrics used by Tod's have a finish that, in many cases, limits the risk of stains, but light-coloured fabrics can still be prone to stains.
After cleaning the shoes in fabric, leave them to air dry away from heat sources and direct light from lamps or the sun; once dry, it is recommended to store them in the appropriate bags.
Satin
Satin can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth using gentle circular movements. Since this is a delicate material, special care must be taken not to rub it against abrasive surfaces.
Velvet
Velvet is a particularly delicate material that is subject to wear and tear. It is recommended to use the material properly, avoiding contact with rainwater, mud and other causes of wear. It is recommended to avoid contact with blunt objects. To remove small amounts of dirt, we recommend using a slightly damp, soft cloth.
Wool and tweed
Wool-based fabrics are absorbent, so contact with liquids may stain them. It is important to protect shoes from rain, alcohol, oil and other liquids. Surface dirt can be gently removed using a clean, dry, soft cloth.
Tweed is a woven wool fabric, meaning it’s durable and offers a warm, structured feel. Due to its woven nature, it is important to avoid contact with sharp or abrasive objects and surfaces that could cause the fabric to snag or tear. Surface dirt can be gently removed using a clean, dry, soft cloth.
PVC
Although its durability is high, PVC is a synthetic fibre, so its breathability is minimal and the surface may tarnish during use. Surface dirt can be gently removed using a damp cloth. Do not use skin care products with PVC as this may alter the transparency.
Advice on the correct treatment of the inner lining, care of the soles and accessories:
The leather used for the inner lining is entirely natural. To remove small amounts of dirt, we recommend using a slightly damp, soft cloth. As for sole care, the smooth and delicate leather soles are subject to wear and tear after their first use. This is not a manufacturing defect. It’s a natural process and part of the sole’s normal wear.
For cleaning rubber soles, we recommend using of a common neutral degreaser with a soft cloth, taking care not to let the product come into contact with the shoe upper.
After prolonged use, shoe underlays may deteriorate naturally. It is advisable to replace them once they start to wear, before the upper part wears out, to avoid irreparable damage.
For any accessories inserted in your footwear, we recommend cleaning them using a soft microfibre cloth.
- How should I take care of my leather bags and accessories? Over the years, your product develop a softer shape and acquire a natural patina. Such development, together with natural marks, folds and veins, is very likely and proves the uniqueness and authenticity of Tod's creations. Any marks caused by time must be cherished.
In order to preserve the shape of your product, we recommend not overloading it and, when not in use, it should be stored in a ventilated area (avoiding damp places such as cellars, attics, garages, etc.) with tissue paper inside, and using the case provided when purchased. It is highly recommended to not place it inside boxes or near sources of heat or direct light, as this may cause the materials to dry out too much.
To keep your product clean, avoid the use of shoe waxes and avoid pen stains, perfumes and cosmetics as these substances cannot be removed, even with professional products.
For dirt stains, on the other hand, it is advisable to use para rubber and, in case of contact with water, the leather must be protected and dried immediately with a soft cloth to prevent slight bulges or unrepairable marks from appearing.
Here are some specific instructions on the correct handling of materials:
Vacchetta
Among its distinguishing features, the transparency and the presence of natural veins and folds that confirm the total absence of treatments stand out. Over time, this delicate and easily scratched material acquires a rich amber patina that makes each creation unique. The patina, together with the marks that appear as the bag is used, proves the authenticity of the item and its use.
In the event of contact with water or rain, immediately dab with a lint-free, light-coloured, absorbent cloth. The use of solvents or other chemicals for cleaning is highly discouraged and home remedies intended to darken the leather, such as mink oil, leather soaps and lotions, or other similar substances, should also be avoided as these chemicals can compromise the quality and integrity of the leather.
Avoid any attempt at cleaning if the leather becomes stained before the patina forms: let the material darken naturally and allow the stains to blend with the colour.
Calfskin
Calf skins are selected based on fineness, flexibility and softness to the touch by means of a process with extremely strict criteria: veins and folds are completely natural characteristics.
Skins can be damaged by common cleaning products and contact with substances such as oils, cosmetics, perfumes, creams or hygiene products can impair their characteristics and natural beauty. In the event of contact with water or rain, immediately dab with a lint-free, light-coloured, absorbent cloth.
Varnish
Avoid any contact between painted leather surfaces and materials that could shed colour (such as magazines, denim objects or garments and other leathers).
Also avoid exposure to sunlight as colours may fade. Light shades of varnish are more sensitive to light and may yellow, lose intensity or change colour.
If there are superficial stains, wipe with a soft cloth.
Fabric
Contact with intensely coloured materials can increase the risk of colour transfer onto the fabric and should therefore be avoided. To avoid abrasion, we recommended limiting contact with particularly hard or rough surfaces (walls, carpets, concrete) and alternating the use of bags to ensure they last longer. If there are superficial stains, wipe with a soft cloth. Home treatments such as mink oil, perfumes, leather lotions, detergents or other chemicals should be avoided, as they may cause premature and irreparable deterioration.
Fine leather
All fine leather is naturally processed and it is important to protect it from moisture, water splashes and rain.
Avoid any contact with water or other liquids, as this may permanently alter the structure of the material, visibly staining it and causing colour transfer. In the event of contact with water, immediately and gently blot the affected area with a light-coloured, lint-free, absorbent cloth. Also avoid exposure to sunlight as colours may fade. Crocodile, alligator, python, lizard, eel, ostrich and elaphe skins are particularly sensitive to moisture and heat, as they can suffer irreparable scale detachment. It is recommended to avoid the use of any liquid or cleaning cream whose action may stain the material. To preserve shape, store the product with tissue paper inside and in the bag provided when purchased. Do not use nylon bags.
Fur
Home treatments such as mink oil, perfumes, leather lotions, detergents or other chemicals are to be avoided, as the use of such treatments may cause premature and irreparable deterioration.
In the event of contact with water or rain, wipe with a soft dry cloth and leave to air dry. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat sources.
Chamois
Home remedies such as mink oil, perfumes, leather lotions, detergents or other chemicals should be avoided, as the use of such remedies may cause premature and irreparable deterioration.
In the event of contact with water or rain, wipe with a soft dry cloth and leave to air dry. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat sources. Use a small brush with rubber and bristles for cleaning.
Cesta leather
Home remedies such as mink oil, perfumes, leather lotions, detergents or other chemicals should be avoided.
For superficial stains, wipe with a soft, dry cloth and leave to air dry.
Raffia
Home remedies such as mink oil, perfumes, leather lotions, detergents or other chemicals should be avoided.
For superficial stains, wipe with a soft, dry cloth and leave to air dry.
- How should I take care of my clothes? Each material from which a garment is made is different and requires special care to preserve and guarantee its quality and beauty over time. We recommend that you consult and keep the instructions on the care label for more detailed information on cleaning and storing.
We recommend storing all our products in cool, dry places, avoiding prolonged exposure to sun and water, and using suitable hangers to preserve the original shape, depending on the product.
For knitted garments, we recommend gently folding each item of clothing to avoid creases and deformations, as well as storing them flat.
Most of our pieces of clothing in natural fabric, such as cotton, wool, silk and cashmere, must be dry-cleaned in specialised centres to guarantee their shape and durability.
Leather goods must strictly be stored in cotton covers, and any washing must be carried out at specialised centres.
- How can I take care of my accessories? Sunglasses
For cleaning Tod's sunglasses, we recommend rinsing them with cold running water before drying the lenses with a soft cloth, using a small amount of mild soap if necessary.
When not in use, store them in a cool, dry place in the box provided. Avoid prolonged exposure of the product to intense heat to prevent deformation. We recommend avoiding wearing Tod's sunglasses on your head so as not to widen the frame and alter the fit.
Small jewellery and accessories
We recommend not applying perfume, hair spray or lotion immediately before putting on jewellery and accessories to avoid dulling or oxidation. Remove them before contact with water and any chemicals or during strenuous physical activity and do not wear them in damp or salty environments to avoid blackening the brass.
We also recommend limiting contact with abrasive surfaces and alternating use to reduce deterioration. When not in use, jewellery and accessories should be stored in the case provided, away from dust, steam, heat and moisture.
Belts and hats
Objects such as belts and hats require special care to maintain their characteristics over time. Avoid contact with sharp or pointed objects. When not in use, store them in a cool, dry place, away from dust and moisture. Dry clean, avoiding home or machine washing, which could damage them.
Candles
On first lighting, allow the candle to burn for one hour so that it burns evenly. The candle must not be left to burn for more than four hours and must be kept away from children and animals. After each use, place the wick back into the wax to prevent it from getting too close to the ceramic. We recommend cutting the wick to a length of 3-5 mm after each use.
